What it does

Holds humidity steady

Cardboard moves with the air around it. Swings are what cup a card and lift a foil layer at the edge.

Tells you the number

A hygrometer turns a guess into a reading. Around 50% RH is the range collectors aim for; what matters as much is that it stops moving.

Keeps dust off

A closed case means the surface you cleaned is the surface you see next month.

How to use it

  1. Add a two-way humidity pack rated near 50% RH. The case holds a level; the pack sets it.
  2. Let it settle a day before trusting the reading.
  3. Keep it out of direct sun and off a heat source; light and heat beat humidity for fading.
  4. Replace the pack when it goes stiff, and glance at the hygrometer when you open it.
